Ingredients

  • 4-5 cups Flour
  • 3 Tbsp Sugar
  • 2 Tsp Salt
  • 2 Pkg Yeast (about 4-1/4 tsp)
  • 1-1/2 cups Warm Water
  • 1/4 cup Oil

Method

  1. In a warm mixing bowl, add the warm water, sugar and yeast. Stir and let the yeast proof until bubbly. Then mix in the salt and oil.
  2. Add 4 cups of the flour, mixing until you have a batter. Keep adding more flour until you have a silky dough, and knead well. Once the dough forms a ball, remove from the bowl and spray the bowl with some non-stick cooking spray. Place the dough back in the bowl and cover with a towel. Set it aside to rise for 15 minutes.
  3. Grease a 9" x 12" pan. Dump the dough onto a floured surface and knead lightly. Divide into 16 equal sized dough balls and arrange in the pan. Let the dough rise again 15 minutes.
  4. After the second rising, put the rolls into a pre-heated 400F degree oven. Check after 12 minutes, but rolls usually take 15 minutes to bake (or longer). Rolls should be nicely golden brown, and will have grown together into pull apart rolls. Make sure that the bottom of the rolls has browned also. This is a good indicator that they are done all the way through.
  5. Remove the hot rolls from the pan so they don't continue to bake. With a cool stick of butter, rub the tops of the rolls so a bit of butter melts in. This will soften the crust of the rolls.

Good to Know

The rolls are great with jam, butter & honey, and in particular with fresh baked ham and cheese.
