Ingredients
- 1 cup butter
- 2 cups sugar
- 3 large eggs
- 1 t baking soda (dissolved in water)
- 1 cup cut up dates
- 3 cups sifted flour
- 1 t cinnamon
- 1 t nutmeg
- 1 t cloves
- dash salt
- 1 cup chopped walnuts
- 2 T sugar
Method
- Cream together butter & 2 cups sugar.
- Beat in eggs one at a time. Dissolve baking soda in water -- Blend into creamed mixtures.
- Add dates, add spices and flour and salt gradually into creamed mixture.
- Blend in the nuts. Chill hours. On lightly floured board form into six rolls, 10" long and 3/4" thick in diameter. Place two rolls on greased cookie sheet. With fingers flatten to 1/4" thickness, leaving finger impressions in dough as design.
- Sprinkle each with 1 tsp sugar. Bake in pre heated oven.
- While hot, make diagonal slices 1 inch apart to form bars.
- Remove immediately to wire rack to cool.
