  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter (softened)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup dark molasses
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (generous)
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger (generous)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup hot water


  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9-inch square pan.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the sugar and butter. Beat in the egg, and mix in the molasses.
  3. In a bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves.
  4. Blend into the creamed mixture.
  5. Stir in the hot water.
  6. Pour into the prepared pan.
  7. Bake 35-45 minutes (start checking at 35 minutes) in the preheated oven, until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow to cool in pan before serving.

I recommend using a metal 9" x 9" pan for best baking quality. if using glass, you may need to add more time the process.
